Mission Statement – An uncompromising commitment to excellence.  The staff is dedicated to providing fair, accurate and timely assessments, exceptional public service and working together as a team for the betterment of our community.

The Tax Assessor’s Office is responsible for the annual assessment and preparation of regular and special tax rolls, which include real estate, motor vehicle excise, and business personal property.  The General Laws of Rhode Island require the Assessor to insure that all assessments are fair and equitable.  The office is an integral part of the Finance Department wherein property tax assessments are continuously maintained to insure that the Tax Collector has the most accurate and current information for the collection of taxes in a timely manner.  The staff is responsible for all clerical functions performed in the update and maintenance of annual tax records, including reading and analyzing deeds, insuring that the Town’s tax maps are kept current, updating ownership records and mailing addresses, mailing of business personal property returns, processing of exemption applications and tax appeals, and providing various types of information to a multitude of customers.

Rhode Island State Laws mandate that cities and towns perform full revaluations of all classes of property every nine (9) years, and a statistical update of all property values every third and sixth year thereafter.  The Town of Coventry 2010/2011 budget process will not be affected by the values determined by the next statistical update and revaluation Project so to be underway.

New 2011 tax assessments to be determined by the update will be based upon market values determined as of December 31, 2010.
